![]() | The photographic work of Rivka Rinn is based on the concept, and understanding, of velocity as one of the central factors which characterize our time. She captures her images, within and along, the high speed trips, through highways, as from train and airplanes. The surprising results are revealing visions unknown to our eyes, and making us conscious about “That which the eye does not know it sees”, in high speed situations. The new highways, architecture, landscapes and urbanscapes disintegrated to dynamic painterly brush strokes. Rivka sees herself as a painter with the camera. “I prefer to deal with the materiality of reality, rather then the materiality of art. I am interested in the phenomenon of our non -awareness of what we see.. More precisely: with the question of our consciousness or unconsciousness of reality.” Her research about the possibility to represent images of velocity by painting, shifted her to use photography in various techniques, as printed canvas, elaborated by computerized scanner. (The theme of her teaching “From painting to photography and vice versa”). She creates series of light boxes, using the artificial light as paint. Lately Rinn’s work concentrated on enlarged photographs in architectural contexts. This concept, is derive from her experience in moving and “seeing in velocity”, through the lens of the camera. Visions of places, are superimposed, upon each other. A world with no barriers and no limits of communications, in which “velocity replace geography”, as defined by Paul Viriglio. She transplanted the image of Johannesburg to the front of the Haus of World Cultures in Berlin, as she transplanted the highway between Florence and Pisa, into the building of Siemens in Munich. Spaces and time, are liberated from the cartographic map, in the present reality which can be defined as the era of displacement, where poeple and their cultures are moving from south to north, from east to west. Rinn integrates in her works the human context along side the high speed of transportation means in the city. Rivka Rinn created her video series, as “Accelerated Heavens 2002, It is a video world without video camera, but created from a sequence of 6000 images, 8 images in a second (Which is the limit that the eye can observe, and the mind to remember). The photos are a diary, written by the lens of the camera. My interest in capturing “Moving Objects” stems from the moving image in the voyage and in the mass comunication (television, cinema). “My interest is the visuality of freezing the moment in motion rather than the narrative content.” Edmond Jabes wrote: “Time is a rememberance without objective being. To coerce time remember-is in effect to halt time”. No place remain for a breath... within this friction, between time and space the photography of Rivka Rinn is born. Rivka Rinn summarize “It is more than about the image of a place, will it be the streams of lights in New York or the moving dunes in the desert, I am interested in the meeting with the place and in the departure from it. In the speed of the trip, the distance between arrival and departure is an eighth of a second, as in my video, the time is shrinking, and we become alert about accelerated flow of the sand in the glass-watch of our life...” Read her monthly newsletter here |
